We are interested in understanding how a neuron acquires its specific cell fate and morphology by using Drosophila and mouse as model systems. We have begun unraveling the logic and underlying mechanisms for generating diversity in neuronal morphology (especially dendritic morphology) and learning how such diversity contributes to the wiring and the function of the nervous system. Besides studying the assembly of a normal nervous system, we are also trying to gain insights into the mechanisms controlling degeneration, regeneration and remodeling of the nervous system.
