Abby Buchwalter

Cell biology of the genome

The Buchwalter lab studies the mechanisms that govern the maintenance, remodeling, and specialization of nuclear organization across cell types. We are particularly interested in the functions of the nuclear lamina, a protein meshwork at the border of the nucleus. Ongoing projects explore the roles of the lamina in scaffolding genome organization and regulating gene expression, as well as the influence of the lamina on other nuclear substructures, such as the nucleolus. We are also exploring how nuclear organization is disrupted during aging. We use techniques from cell biology, biochemistry, genomics, and proteomics to answer questions, and value creativity, collaboration, and inclusion.
