Primary cilia signaling during development and disease

Primary cilia are small antenna shaped structures about the size of a bacterium. Despite their small size they play an important yet only poorly understood role in cellular sensing. For instance, mutations in primary cilia proteins lead to a variety of human diseases called ciliopathies. My lab studies the physiological function of Ca2+ signaling and ion channels in primary cilia. We want to understand how primary cilia utilize ion channels for cellular signaling and develop novel methods to study this tiny organelle.
