How Cells Count and Measure
Our lab is interested in the engineering design principles of cellular morphogenesis. How does the shape and architecture of individual cells develop? The same questions usually asked about animal development can also be asked for individual cells. In one approach, we analyze the mechanisms controlling size, number, and organization of individual organelles, using a combination of genetics, imaging, and modeling. Our other main approach is to analyze the developmental biology and regeneration of single cells using the giant ciliate Stentor coeruleus, which we have recently developed as a molecular and genomic model system.
